The Nyquist criteria doesn't apply to 146 MHz. We can reasonably assume
the signal is bandwidth limited for our purposes. If we sample at twice
the maximum expected modulation rate, we will meet the criteria.
Actually, it may be argued that the Nyquist rate doesn't apply.
We are merely trying to determine signals uniquely, not reproduce
them precisely. This is the basis of fingerprinting. You don't
need a full color 3 dimensional image to incriminate someone, much
less enough information to clone someone. :-).

Can anyone tell me where the Cincinnati, OH hamfest is being held this
year? It moved from the old Stricker's Grove location into the metro
Cinti area, but I don't know where. Approximate directions or an address
for the fest would be greatly appreciated; the FAQ only lists the mail
address of the organizer....

Hi. A friend of mine (VO1ANJ) is moving to Toronto on the 23 of this
month and he was looking for the following information:
1) The frequencies and calls for the local repeaters in and around Toronto.
2) Packet frequencies and packet BBS's in the area.
3) HAM clubs in the area.
4) HAM BBS's or regular bbs's in Toronto.
5) Reasonably priced public Internet Access and how $$$.
If anyone has this or any other information relating to amateur radio in
the Toronto area, he'd be quite grateful. Please e-mail me at the address

Subject: Lafeyette receiver documentation sought
To: info-hams@ucsd.edu
Hi all... I posted about this over a year ago and had no joy. I have
a bit of new info and thought I would try again.
I have acquired a Lafeyette KT-340 (tube-type) SW receiver with no
documentation. I believe this model may have been the kit version of
some other Lafeyette radio (HA-??? I saw one once that looked identical
and now kick myself for not looking closer). Anyway, I will describe
the set and ask anyone with a model like this (or a hollow-state
reference book listing something like this) to contact me - even if
it is just with the model number of the factory built version.
The set has nine tubes (1 5Y3G, 1 6AQ5, 2 6AV6, 3 6BA6, 2 6BE6)
with at least 3 big 455KHz IF cans. The console has the following
controls (left to right): Function (off/AM/Send/Q-mult), AF Gain,
Selectivity (locks fully CW at "AM/SSB" marking), BFO-Q Multiplier,
Band (4 position), IF gain, Ant Trim, AVC/MVC, ANL. Glass dial above
with S-meter on left side and Main Tuning/Bandspread dials to the right.
If someone recognizes my poor orphan, give a shout. I would be most
grateful (and pay for) for a user manual, schematic or especially
service/alignment instructions or copy of same.
.............Dave

They split off the General questions from Tech in 1987, long before the
code test free Tech license came out. The idea was that the Techs didn't
need to know the material on HF propagation, operation, and rules since
they couldn't operate there. That made sense, but the FCC screwed it
up. Instead of increasing the VHF+ questions, they just divided the
old written in half because it was easiest for them to do. That made
the Tech written too easy.

Wayne Green, publisher of 73 Magazine, said on the Ham Radio & More
show, 8/14/94, that we should have only 1 class of amateur license. It
should require 5 wpm code knowledge and more theory than is tested
now. It would allow full priviledges on all bands. Wayne also said he wants
to see programs started in schools. Every school should have a ham club
and actually teach electronics and amateur radio. This will most definitely
advance the hobby and technology.

I think that is a VERY important aspect. Many low-end radios are
quite common among the ham population using even a single repeater.

What's the matter Ken? Two smileys in the above paragraph STILL
did not get across to you that it was a joke?? I guess I should
have put one after the second sentence too. <sigh> My fault.
Indirectly, the Nyquist comment did get you out of the woodwork! ;-)
Anyway, thanks for some interesting commentary that answered most
of my questions. I cannot speak for the originator, of course.

I think catching them on the input is the biggest problem, HTs
being low-power devices and all.

Any estimate on how much data is required to be saved in a single
"finger-print" record? You do seem to thing that the characteristics
will not change over time. Guess we'll have to see if it ever does
fly in the amateur radio community. I guess if you wanted to deliberately
be obnoxious, you could use a different radio only for that purpose.
